Introduction to Geraldine Shiels

I am hugely successful because I take the hopes, fears, goals and desires that exist in women worldwide, and unpick them.

When you work with me, together we deliver!

I am a Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Transformational Life Coach, Mentor, Teacher and Trainer (soon to be published author) and parent.

I love the fact that personal development will impact your whole life, not just the time I work with you. I offer and teach life changing skills and a new perspective and awareness, which remain yours forever.

Whatever area in your life is holding you back, I have the solution. There are strategies and skills to learn which leave you feeling hugely competent and empowered, so you can shape your own life forever.

It was after I had studied ‘Neuro-Linguistic Programming’ (NLP) to the highest level, that my  life was transformed.

As a former High School Teacher with 20 years of teaching under my belt, I realised that I had finally found my true passion. I saw instant changes in myself and others and knew that working with  women was a source of ongoing inspiration for me.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is just like an instruction manual to understand the human mind and behaviour. It enables people to communicate powerfully and let go of old unskilful patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaviour. It allows you to take charge of your life.

NLP has been called Practical Psychology. when I combine it with my two Masters Degrees and all my other studies then…

I guarantee results for you.

I am future focussed, steeped in Psychology and I teach with clarity, whether the topic is business, relationships, leadership or more personal issues.

Some less well known information:

I am the Managing Director and owner of Bobby Charlton Soccer Academy (where the renowned David Beckham was discovered). We welcome football players from all over the globe to our residential summer camps in Manchester. I have been running Bobby Charlton’s for 15 years. I am also the mother of four sons and a practicing Buddhist.

Why work with Geraldine?

Life isn’t simple and will always be filled with opportunities and challenges. Nobody teaches you the lessons I teach so how can you learn them otherwise?

Books, podcasts, courses and Instagram can only inspire you for a short time short time. Sadly they rarely lead to permanent new patterns of behaviour and thinking.

I have spent the last 40 years studying and practically applying what I have learnt. During this time I have been down many blind alleys. I have wasted an enormous amount of time and money on areas that seemed to offer me the answers. Working with me means that you will not have to do this.

Over the last four decades I have spent a minimum of three hours a day investing in my personal development. This means that even while excluding the hours that I have spent on studying, training, client work and supervision, this is in excess of 40,000 hours.

I have been on my own quest that you get to benefit from.
I will take you on a journey to achieve Emotional Independence, confidence in your abilities, and the power to create your own life. I will walk by your side as you evolve, shower you with acceptance and love, challenge you (tough love) and forever change your life.

The best bit is, you will begin to see a shift in your perspective immediately.
My clients are predominantly through referrals as the best endorsement is word of mouth. My passion speaks for itself and once you meet me, you will see why I  stand out in my field, because I walks my talk and face all life challenges with a hugely balanced attitude.

I believe I was born a passionate teacher and now I am teaching people to live engaged, happy, contented lives.

About Geraldine

What inspires you outside of work?

It’s funny because I never feel any difference between work and life mode which, clearly demonstrates that I am in the right profession. At all times I am using everything I have learnt to make my life smoother and more enjoyable, even when I mess up.

Strength Training

I love to lift weights. It is funny when some women think that is not very feminine because I am a girly girl, but the feeling of the resistance and the metal is something special. I like to be challenged and it takes commitment and discipline.

I enjoy working out with other women, because I love the feel of being part of something. We encourage each other, and we want the very best for each other and celebrate each others achievements. I used to work out on my own but from January 10th 2018 I joined a Strength Camp. Each Strength Camp is nine weeks with 27 sessions (or 36 sessions if you choose to attend on the weekend). We are in groups of three or four women with a personal trainer who pushes us far beyond where we believe we can go. this is a perfect example of a solid strategy that leads to success.

I have completed 11 Strength Camp’s back to back and made some incredible women friends, so I guess that’s 297 sessions over the last 2 years, without counting my weekends, and I love it.

When I travelled to America in October I continued to work out in a Gold Gym which was really excellent.      In November in Iceland, I took a week’s pass to an incredible gym where I worked out with the Bobby Charlton coaches.
This is easy for me because I know from my NLP training that if I want anything in life, I simply have to put in place a fool-proof strategy, and once it is in place I will always get results. Without a strategy in place, life will just become flimsy hopes, just like new years resolutions, and we all know what happens to those.

Bouldering

I didn’t even know there was such a thing as bouldering until five years ago, and I really enjoy it. I have done some rope climbing before and since, but I prefer bouldering. In Manchester we have some fantastic climbing centres but my favourite is The Depot. I think I love climbing because unlike strength training, and weightlifting there is no actual specific way to work.
In bouldering your task is to solve the problems. This often takes a great deal of thinking, trial and error, laughter, falling and huge sense of achievement when you succeed.

Lately two of my sons often join me climbing and it is exciting for me to crack challenges that they cannot, however they are such fast learners and the clock is ticking and before long they’ll become excellent and leave me behind 🙂

Family

When I was growing up, and when I was teaching full time at no point did I ever daydream about having children. Some of my friends used to talk about it at school and it was never anything that crossed my mind. To be honest I think I was quite personally driven and my world maybe revolved around me. I had my first son at 30 and by the time my first born was eight years and three weeks old I had four children.

So many people asked me in my fourth pregnancy if I was hoping for a girl, and the honest answer was no, I was grateful for a healthy baby.

Parenting four boys has been an interesting, wonderful adventure because there is no course you can take to prepare you for the daily unfolding of a human moving through their life-stages to adult hood.
I am well aware of how blessed I am.

Skye

Nine years ago for the first time in my life I became the owner of a dog.

She’s a Vizslador (a cross between a Hungarian Vizler and a Hunter Labrador)

My family are not dog people, and as a child, and all through my adulthood, I have never been around a dog. Skye has been an absolute blessing for me, I was in a very challenging time when I bought her, and I cannot really believe she was that size as a puppy.

It is in undisputed fact, in psychology, that getting out in nature is good for our psychological health. I have gone on long, beautiful walks which I would never have taken until I got Skye. It is so funny that when you have a dog, you are in a completely different community of people. It is kind of like becoming a parent and joining a new club.

It was a fantastic decision in hindsight for me to get a dog, and she brings me great joy.

Meditation

I am a prolific meditator if there is such a thing! I meditate every single day of my life and could not and would not miss my meditation any more than I would miss brushing my teeth. It is part of who I am.
For those people who know me, and know that I can be a hyperactive, high energy, fast talking whirlwind of a girl, it seems a complete contradiction that I can sit for an hour with my eyes closed without moving.
It has taken me years to get to this place and I can honestly remember when even meditating for just 60 seconds was a huge, frustrating, seemingly impossible, annoying challenge.
I decided I wanted to be a meditator and therefore I devised a strategy and I put the work in.
The draw to meditation is not just what happens in the experience of sitting alone with yourself and going within. The benefit of meditation for me, is all about the other hours of the day. A byproduct of my meditation, is that I am less reactive. Meditation has slowed down my reactiveness. Now I feel that there is a space, where I can choose always how to respond, which has had an incredible impact on my life.
I am a proud meditator, and by that I mean I do not feel I have to hide while meditating. I will meditate in a park, on the bus, I will meditate in the gym when I have finished my workout, and I will meditate absolutely anywhere and the noise does not affect me as the peace is inside.
Part of the reason I meditate in public if I need to, is because it leads to people often asking me questions and I can guide them to some amazing apps and over the last five years many people now have a solid meditation practice simply from observing me meditating and connecting with me.
I qualified as a certified mindfulness and meditation teacher in 2017 because I believe that just because you are good at something, does not mean you are necessarily good at teaching it, and therefore I wanted to be qualified to teach meditation.

Buddhism

It makes me smile that Buddhism focuses so heavily on suffering, and yet on the whole, Buddhists are very smiley, happy people. I think I may have stumbled into Buddhism as a result of meditation. It may seem silly to say that I was surprised by how simple it is, to accept that suffering exists for every human being, and that we can learn ways of lowering our own suffering and the suffering of other people.

Practising as a Buddhist guides my life, and helps me to make moral and honest decisions, and reminds me to be compassionate and kind.

It overlaps so completely with everything I have ever learnt in NLP, and Positive Psychology.

I suppose all three subjects consider how people can be the very best versions of themselves, so I guess it is no surprise when I consider the huge similarities in all my studying.

I am currently undertaking a four year study course in Buddhism which entertains my friends who often ask if I’m off to my “be kind” lessons. Other than these activities, I spend a lot of time listening to Audible books, attending conferences, seminars and workshops to continually extend my learning.

In my opinion, the best teachers are learners
